Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is the series’ most successful launch

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is breaking records in the UK as it is the biggest Zelda release to date and the biggest boxed release of the year.
That Tears of the Kingdom would be one of the biggest games of the year was inevitable; Breath of the Wild is one of the most critically acclaimed games ever, and video games are better than ever. But now, thanks to GamesIndustry.biz, we know how big its release was. For one, it’s the biggest boxed release of the year, coming in at 54% higher than the previous biggest release, though we don’t know how good sales are overall, as Nintendo doesn’t share in digital sales. Although as he points out GamesIndustry.bizdigital sales are generally much lower than other platforms, so it’s unclear how much better it has done.
Not only that, but it’s the biggest Zelda release in the series’ history, with 2.7 times more sales than Breath of the Wild’s 2017 release. Breath of the Wild was previously the biggest physical release of the week. one, but Tears of the Kingdom has taken that slot, putting the former in second and The Wind Waker in third.
On top of that, it’s the eighth greatest Zelda game of all time just days after release, beating Skyward Sword on the Wii and The Wind Waker again on the GameCube. Revenue-wise, it’s doing even better, ranking as the fourth-biggest Zelda game of all time, behind only Ocarina of Time, Twilight Princess, and Breath of the Wild.
Pokemon Scarlet and Violet remain the Switch games with the best opening week sales, with Tears of the Kingdom down 12%, though as Christopher Dring of GI.biz Note, the dual release of the Pokemon games makes it a bit strange, so ignoring that Tears of the Kingdom is the second biggest UK release, behind only Wii Fit. But while it sold fewer copies than Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, revenue was up 8%, helped in part by the Tears of the Kingdom Collector’s Edition.
Even Breath of the Wild has seen a surge in sales, with boxed sales up 31% week-over-week, even finishing back in the top 10 at eighth in the UK charts.
None of this should come as a huge surprise, as Tears of the Kingdom is the highest-rated game of all time on OpenCritic, and our own review also gives the game a five out of five.
