Xbox Game Pass gets surprise day one bonus – a cracking 3D Metroidvania sequel

Many of the most exciting games on Xbox’s unbeatable Game Pass service come in the form of little bonus games that seem to appear out of nowhere. Some of the top indie games on the service debuted via these last-minute surprise additions (Coffee Talk comes to mind). And while some games released this way don’t do too well (Generation Zero, we’d like to say a word), we’re never going to see another addition to the service come to the fore.
Today, Supra Games UG released Supraland: Six Inches Under, a follow-up to Supraland, its underdog puzzle game Metroidvania, as a surprise day-one addition to Xbox Game Pass. And it builds on the previous game’s formula in deeper and more interesting ways.
So what the heck is this game? Supraland: Six Inches Under puts you in the role of a highly stressed Blue Plumber, tasked with rescuing and protecting the townspeople of Supraland after a tragic event beset the miniature population in the form of “The Rakening”. The (literal) sandbox has been blown wide open, and now your job is to dig deep into the clay soil below to make sure these strange little people can go on with their little lives in peace.
Similarly to the first game, Six Inches Under is a 3D first-person “metroidvania”, according to the developer, which is “a unified world filled with pathways to discover and secrets or sub-areas that can only be accessed once you you come back”. with a new ability or item.” The game is a bit less open-ended than the original, thanks to the fact that we’re going underground.
“The paths are more defined and distinct: caves and corridors connected by a central axis called Cagetown, where all the toy survivors of the terrible Rakening live,” says Connor Bridgeman, senior brand manager at Humble Games.
The pride and joy of the game is the pride and joy of the game – puzzles. By the developer’s own estimate, the game’s puzzling elements make up almost half of the entire experience, and the studio team invented a multi-level system to ensure that only the most compelling and satisfying challenges made it through the editing process.
If they’re anything like the first game, they’ll live and die with that addictive “aha!” moment, when you figure out the process and all the remaining steps flow together like quicksilver until you’ve figured out the solution.
Do you need to have played the first Supraland game in order to enjoy this one? You are welcome. You can dive in blindly (oh, the joy of Games Pass!) and still figure out pretty quickly what it’s all about. Think of a miniature world, somewhere between Grounded, the TT Lego games, and Hollow Knight, and you’ll have a vague idea of what to expect. For returning players, there are revised combat mechanics and new abilities that you engage with that make this more than just an expansion to the first game.
So if you want a game that’s “about 55% exploration, 40% puzzle-solving, and 5% combat,” look no further than the surprise addition of Supraland: Six Inches Under, which is available on Xbox Game Pass. and PC Game Pass. today.
With this, Ravenlok, the upcoming Planet of Lana, and the other big titles we’ve seen added to the service in recent weeks (ignore Redfall), it’s almost possible to pretend you’re not missing The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom if you’re an Xbox gamer.
