Sometimes you use data to make important decisions, other times you take the advice of two middle-aged men who don’t know what they’re talking about. In this video, Jim Trinca and I decided on the best starter Pokémon in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, with as much knowledge as you could hope for.
What are the starter Pokémon in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet?
As is tradition in Pokémon games, you can choose from three Pokémon to start your adventure in Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet. We’ve detailed them here so you can see basic information like type and ability.
Pokemon: | Category: | Write: | Height: | Weight: | Ability: |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
esprigato | Pokemon Cat Grass | Grass | 1’4″ | 9 pounds | Overgrow |
fuecoco | Fire Crocodile Pokemon | Fire | 1’4″ | 21.6 pounds | Radiance |
Quaxly | duckling pokemon | Water | 1’8″ | 13.4 pounds | Torrent |

esprigato
According to Nintendo and The Pokemon Company, Sprigatito is “whimsical and attention-seeking.” He seems to get jealous quite easily and is prone to sulking if his trainer pays attention to another Pokémon.
fuecoco
We could have guessed it from his photo, but Nintendo confirms that Fuecoco is “laid back and does things at his own pace.” If you thought, “that critter loves to eat,” you’re right, he does, and he runs for whatever food he sees.
Quaxly
What else is there to say other than that Quaxly is one attractive duck? Well, the fact that she’s a serious little thing and doesn’t like to get her head dirty, no doubt for fear of ruining that amazing hair.
What is the best starter Pokemon in Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet?
Jim and I had a good chat about this (see the video above) and we both definitely decided that Quaxly is the best starter Pokémon. Because it’s a duck. It looks super cool. We also like the fact that he uses a gel to soften his feathers, just like on the Happy Days TV show.
