The game is filled to the coffin lid with undead protagonists. goblin vampires. Detectives murdered with unfinished business. Starship captains raised from the dead by a rogue human supremacist terrorist organization with a trillion dollar CEO. The list goes on. And indeed, lit.
But what is the best game with an undead protagonist? And why the hell did no one pick Grim Fandango? Only one of these questions is answered in this week’s Best Games Ever Show, which is a little short this week because the recording didn’t quite work and Jim is on paternity leave, so there’s no time to fix it. Still, at least the situation is framed by an ironic symmetry. You know, births, deaths, all that kind of stuff.

Bertie buys
Bertie went with Alpha Protocol, a classic Obsidian spy RPG that gave us a Mass Effect-style spin on spy TV shows like ALIAS, and was a stopper, too. Unfortunately, it was massively overshadowed by Mass Effect and never found the wide audience it deserved. But those of us who played it at the time enjoyed the thrill of being an international super-spy in such exotic places as Rome, Taipei, Saudi Arabia, and Moscow.

Microsoft flight simulator is the ultimate jetsetting game. Literally. With its stunningly detailed world map (regularly updated with higher-quality assets) and realistic flight mechanics that are as simple or as complex as you want, the 2020 revamp of the classic sim series came at a time when people were stuck in their homes and were crying out to travel again, so it’s perhaps not surprising that it’s become so popular with sim-heads and casual gamers alike. With a sequel on the way in 2024 that adds a highly anticipated job system to the proceedings, the future for this series looks very bright.
“What is the best game show of all time?” you ask? Well, it’s essentially a 30 minute panel where people (Jim Trinca and associates) decide on the best game in a specific category. That’s all. It’s good. listen to it.
