This official Final Fantasy 16 merch must be some kind of sick joke

There are many intense moments in Final Fantasy 16; Even from the very beginning of the game, where you’re involved in a full-scale chase scene involving a pair of Eikons, Square Enix keeps the adrenaline pumping in the biggest RPG hit of 2023. But one of the standout moments involved one of the game’s great evils, Hugo Kupka, and the god that resides within him, Titan.

Warning: Spoilers for Final Fantasy 16 mid-to-late game ahead

The smile reaper.

The fight against the Titans, foreshadowed and telegraphed from pretty much the beginning of the game, is big. No pun. Taking place in multiple locations and in multiple sentences, the grudge between grizzly protagonist Clive Rosfield and human mountain Hugo Kupka is one of the central conflicts studied in the game.

And with good reason; both men think they are vindicated in their hatred for the other, both would risk their lives to defend their idea of justice. Both are stubborn and self-destructive in pursuit of their ideals. This conflict, in essence, exalts many of the main themes of Final Fantasy 16. So it stands to reason that the (eventual) fight between the two is so climactic and is a big part of the game’s focus.

Anyone who has managed to subdue Titan at least once knows the fate at the hands of poor Hugo; He is literally disarmed by Clive in the final moments of his first momentous meeting. However, Kupka quickly retreats; dragged by unknown forces to a secret location that Clive then sets out to find like the bloodhound that he is.

But that moment, to see Clive’s blade rise up, cut, and burn with hot flames, is quite shocking. A few moments ago, Titan bragged that he would ‘end your life with his bare hands’. Oh the irony. For the player, it’s a moment of wonder; Clive, with his inexperienced and unreliable power, can cut off the hands of a god. The power of him is just beginning to show.

So to see Square Enix release one of their very high quality Play Arts Kai figures of Kupka with replaceable hands…it’s a lot of fun. I’ll note though that it’s perhaps a missed opportunity: In the image to the side, you can see that there are a number of expressive hands you can place on the model, but there are no metal hands (the ones you’ll see Kupka equipped later on). in-game, when everything ‘gets a bit like Jamie Lannister’).

Kupka isn’t alone: there’s also a figure for every Dominant/Eikon in Final Fantasy 16, as well as Godfather Torgal. Each figure will set you back a pocket full of gil, weighing in at $129.99. Square Enix notes that shipments are expected to take place at various times over the next year.

Is this the kind of thing you’re interested in collecting? I’m also including an image of Torgal in this piece because, well, look at the quality!
