The Witcher social media throws Liam Hemsworth under the bus

Netflix’s The Witcher season 3 is pushing hard on social media for people to check out the latest batch of new episodes. However, in doing so, it seems as though rising star Liam Hemsworth is taking a backseat to Henry Cavill.

Just a glance at recent posts from the show’s official Twitter account reveals a real-world marketing collage centered around Cavill. These ads, light shows showing the Witcher promo next to famous landmarks, signal that Henry Cavill is still appearing in the final season.

“Yeah, it’s still Geralt in season 3” is literally lit up all over the world. This says a lot about the peculiar current place the show is in. Henry Cavill is beloved, and in the role of Geralt, he faithfully brought the character to life and gained popularity on the big screen in recent years. It’s not a leap to say that he, along with co-stars Anya Chalotra, Fraya Allen, and Joey Batey, became the center of the show’s appeal.

However, the reality is that Cavill is no longer the center of the show. After his departure in late 2022, a lot of energy has been spent reassuring fans and promoting Liam Hemsworth. But at this point, with the early part of the show’s third season now, you have to assume that more effort should be made to politely remove it.

Just one look at the comments on the aforementioned post highlights the confusion and frustration of the situation. “The fact that they have to remind people that they’re still at it just to get them to tune in absolutely says where this series is going,” writes Twitter user Gregson Arsenal. “What will they do next season?” This sentiment is shared by many commentators, who mourn the loss of an actor who, in their eyes, is Geralt.

Whether his eventual absence from the show will have a positive or negative impact remains to be seen, as the episodes continue to unfold over the next few weeks. Either way, here’s hoping that once Hemsworth takes the spotlight in her new role, she gets a little more love.
