The Witcher is getting a full remake in Unreal Engine 5

The Witcher is being remade in Unreal Engine 5, as CD Projekt Red just revealed on the 15th anniversary of the original game’s release. Currently in the early stages of development, the game is being created for the most part by Fool’s Theory, a Polish development studio that has worked on a variety of titles such as Divinity Original Sin 2 and Baldur’s Gate 3 in support.

The game is being built from the ground up using Unreal Engine 5 in keeping with how the next Witcher trilogy will play out. As such, you can probably expect this new version to look and feel like the future of IP as a whole.

It seems like the best type of game to play on the Steam Deck, if I’m being honest.

In terms of other information, there are few amounts to go on besides the work-in-progress logo you’ve already seen above. The Witcher is the king of the pots when it comes to the series, and it’s not very easy to come back after all these years. This has meant that a lot of the Witcher narrative hasn’t been experienced by many, making this remake more justified than others we’ve seen in recent months.

This also comes as another big announcement from CD Projekt Red following numerous revelations in recent months, in what some are calling a simple attempt to win investor support ahead of the fiscal year. It is true that the company has been going around very, very early reveals about projects without much substance to go along with them lately, and following the release of Cyberpunk 2077, there may be reasons to convince suits that the company still has plenty on offer.

Having never played The Witcher, I daresay I’d be excited to jump into a new take on the original story. Playing The Witcher 3, the game was good at filling in the gaps in the narrative with callbacks and dialogue so you wouldn’t get lost. However, being able to see the pivotal events of the trilogy firsthand in a shiny new engine can only be good news for fans of the series.

But what do you think? Are you interested in this remake? Or is it unnecessary? let us know below!
