Did you know that a kingdom hearts Was the TV series in development in the past? Well, it was, and the original director shared the pilot earlier this week.
The Kingdom Hearts television series was an American-developed version of the original game, but it never got off the ground. While bits of the show have surfaced online over the years, such as storyboards and various artwork, a completed pilot has been the holy grail fans have been searching for for years. Now, project director Seth Kearsley has shared the full animated pilot online, and it’s honestly not the worst thing in the world.
The animatic is narrated by Pinocchio’s Jiminy Cricket, a sidekick of protagonist Sora in the original game, and fits nicely as such considering he keeps a canonical diary of the game’s events. It’s definitely rough around the edges as it’s an animation rather than a full animation.
Interestingly, almost the entire voice cast returned, the only one missing was Haley Joel Osment as Sora himself, apparently due to scheduling conflicts, making this one of the rare times he hasn’t voiced the character.
Kingdom Hearts can sometimes have a hard time capturing the characteristics of characters like Donald and Goofy, as well as having its own version of them, but the pilot is much more like how they are in other guises.
The pilot is also very condensed and tells you everything you need to know, most of it set in Agrabah from Aladdin.
in a separate videoKearsley explained that he decided to share the pilot due to a serious car accident he experienced in January of this year that almost took his life, so he wanted to share the work he hadn’t done before to “go out into the world.”
Unfortunately, Kearsley has since removed his upload, as someone at Disney “was politely asked to kindly ask me to take it down,” as He explained. Although obviously someone else has re-uploaded it, so you still have time to check it out.
Overall, it’s an interesting look at an alternate world, one that would have featured a very 2000s version of Disney’s Kingdom Hearts. Whether that’s a better world or not, we’ll never know.
