Teamfight Tactics players are furious about gacha-style battle pass

set 9 of Team Fight Tactics – titled Runeterra Reforged – has gone live. While players are having a blast with the drastically new collection of units, combos, and mechanics in the game, many are frustrated with the changes that have been made to the battle pass.
The main source of anger stems from the removal of Little Legend’s eggs. Previously, players who spent enough time in the set could expect some eggs as a reward, regardless of whether they were paying for the premium pass or not. These would grant a random Little Legend, an upgradable player avatar, for the lifetime of the game. For those who paid for the pass, the new Little Legends in the current set were easily accessible.
However, Riot Games removed these eggs from the battle pass and replaced them with a new type of currency called Treasure Tokens. Instead of collecting the eggs directly, players can now spend these Treasure Tokens in Treasure Realms. It’s a gacha system, a style of reward system where players spend money on random rewards. If you haven’t experienced one before, the term has its roots in Japanese gachapon toy machines, but you can think of it as a kind of video game slot machine that pays cosmetics instead of cash.
There are two ways to view this change. A sunny perspective, the opinion held by Riot Games in the official material detailing the new pass, is that this gives all players a trackable and secure way to obtain Mythic cosmetics. The rarest and most valuable type of reward you can get from the Teamfight Tactics battle pass, Mythic cosmetics used to be prizes owned by the hardest-hitting high rollers or a lucky few. Players who roll 60 times (by spending 6,000 treasure tokens) are guaranteed to get a Mythic now, a nice reward for long-term support.
However, those in the Teamfight Tactics community who have been excited about these changes point out how this removes the foolproof selection of cool Little Legends players that you used to get with the rare purchase of a premium pass, and replaces it with a dice roll that may very well result in disappointment. Not to mention, the time it will take to reach that 60 roll mark is certainly substantial.
“If we take a quick look at the math of the pass, it would take the average player about 2 AND A HALF YEARS to get a mythic,” writes the Reddit user. ExcelIsSuck on Teamfight Tactics Reddit in a scathing post warning players not to buy the pass. “That’s assuming a battle pass every 3 months, and that you buy each one. This is an incredible amount of time for a few pixels on a screen.”
That point stems from the fact that there are currently 600 tokens embedded in the current pass. As such, while the idea of a 60-scroll guarantee sounds good, the time it will realistically take to get the current mythic loot will take a long time. With the premium pass costing 1295 Riot Points (premium currency) while previous Mythic Little Legends like Chibi Teemo cost 1900 Riot Points, the promise of an eventual Mythic doesn’t make much sense in a financial sense.
With excitement over the possibility of the mythos of the future turning sour and pickling just hours after Runeterra Reforged releases, players are left looking to the value of the pass itself to judge it on its own merits. Whereas before, Premium Pass buyers got nine eggs and two of them were current set specific eggs, now you get six scrolls in the treasury. Non-paying players are especially affected, going from five eggs to two rolls at Treasure Trove. It’s not a good look.
The free battle pass used to include 5 eggs which has been reduced to 2 loot chances. (200 tokens)
The premium pass used to get 9 eggs (2 events) and a capsule and has been reduced to 6 extractions. (600 tokens)
Good luck spinning this one. The new pass is terrible and of lesser value. pic.twitter.com/It2fXxvhjv

Riot Games has yet to make a statement on this backlash, but with hordes of players feeling the emptiness of their beloved eggs, you have to imagine it will be addressed sooner or later. But what do you think? If you’re a Teamfight Tactics player, do you think the premium pass is still good value for money? On a broader note, do you expect this gacha model style to become mainstream across the industry? Let us know!
