Super Mario Bros. Movie producer downplays those Legend of Zelda film rumours

A recent rumor claimed that Illumination, Universal, and Nintendo were close to a The legend of Zelda movie deal, but the producer of Mario Movie has put that to bed.

It’s pretty safe to say that the Super Mario Bros. movie has made a lot of money (it’s one of the the best animated movies of all time). So, unsurprisingly, everyone is wondering which Nintendo IP could be next. TO recent report he claimed that it would, in fact, be none other than Zelda, and rumor had it that Nintendo, Universal, and Illumination were very close to forming a deal. Except that doesn’t seem to be the case, since according to an interview with the envelopeSuper Mario Bros. movie producer Chris Meledandri says he doesn’t even know where the rumor came from.

“I don’t know where that came from,” Meledandri said of the rumor. “I mean I can understand how people assume all kinds of things because obviously we’ve had great experience working together. My relationship with Nintendo now includes being on their board of directors, so I understand how people can assume these things.” But in terms of details, that’s something I’ve been hearing a lot of reports about. It’s about what’s next between Nintendo and Illumination.”

This quote from Meledandri obviously shows that the producer and Nintendo are closely linked now, so it wouldn’t be surprising if Nintendo plans to work with Illumination again. After all, a Mario sequel seems to be technically in the works, at least according to his voice actor Chris Pratt anyway.

However, a Zelda movie would probably take a long time to come to an agreement, since Nintendo is famous for protecting its IP; Furthermore, Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma said that nothing is in the works at this time.

Personally, I really don’t want Illumination to handle a Zelda movie. I’m not necessarily on the Studio Ghibli team either, let’s give some of Japan’s younger animation studios a try. I really don’t want Link to be played by someone like Tom Holland and say “hyah”, in a movie trailer voice that’s too thick.
