South of Midnight is a radical looking third person action adventure game set in the American South. It got a trailer today at Xbox game Showcase revealing its arrival on Game Pass, Xbox Series X/S, and Steam. Unfortunately, we didn’t get a release date.

The trailer we got, a short CG video showing the main character Hazel, is full of South American charm. You can check it out for yourself below!

Next to the trailer, a the interview was uploaded to the Xbox website with Creative Director David Sears and Narrative Producer and Creative Specialist James Lewis. According to Sears, the game was inspired by: “the most interesting geological, topographical, cultural, social, and historical areas of the South.”

Sears also delves into the look of the game, which is apparently somewhat inspired by Coraline’s look and the work of Rankin/Bass. “If you look closely, you may notice that the fibers in a character’s clothing are a bit thicker and looser than normal. It is as if the clothes were ripped from a miniature world and worn by a much larger person. That’s just one example, of course. In general, we are looking for the feeling that everything is made by hand instead of recreating photorealistic objects, which helps create the feeling of being in a folktale.”

If you’re interested in the game, there’s plenty more to read in that interview that we suggest diving into. But from the small amount we’ve seen and read, South of Midnight seems like a great addition to a show packed with bombastic greatest hits. Don’t overlook it!

If you want to read more about what was shown off at the Xbox Games Showcase, we’ve got plenty of coverage on the show, including the new trailer for Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth.
