Sonic Frontiers “still has a long way to go,” apparently

sonic frontiers It’s just been released, but according to game director Morio Kishimoto, there’s still work to be done.
It’s the first time in five years that we’ve got a new 3D Sonic game, and depending on your perspective, Sonic Frontiers is either a huge step up or just not your thing. Unfortunately, though, it’s pretty objective that the game doesn’t always perform at its best, particularly on the Switch, which is somewhat visually tricky. But Kishimoto seems to know there are problems, and admits that “there’s still a long way to go” with the game.
“Sorry I haven’t contacted you until now, because we’ve been busy since the release date,” Kishimoto tweeted on Friday (November 11, translations from GamesRadar). I’m relieved that the release date has arrived and that [Sonic Frontiers] seems to have reached everyone safely.
“We’re reviewing feedback from critics and players. As you’ve noted, we still have a long way to go and we’ll take this seriously as a global playtest.”
Obviously, it’s unclear if the phrase is just as strange in Japanese, since treating a literal Sonic the Hedgehog game release as a playtest doesn’t seem like the best move. But then again, this latest entry marks a pretty big change for the series, so it’s perhaps not entirely surprising that this game is more of a big test for the future of the series than anything else.
VG247 did not review Sonic Frontiers, but overall the game received fairly mixed reviews. At the high end of scores, CVG gave it a 4/5, calling it “the best 3D Sonic game in years”, while GamesRadar gave it a 2/5, saying “Was taking on Sonic’s open world an ambitious endeavor? Yes. Was it worth it? Absolutely not.”
I guess we’ll have to wait and see what Kishimoto means by “still a long way to go” and if the team can improve on the groundwork they laid out.
