Resident Evil 4 Remake has made the chainsaw man even more terrifying

when you think of Resident Evil 4, one of the first things that comes to mind is probably those zombies armed with chainsaws and with burlap potato sacks over their faces. They were pretty scary, especially when you learned that it only takes one full sweep with that chainsaw to kill Leon Kennedy.

Recently, I sat down with Resident Evil 4 Remake. I didn’t get to spend much time with the game, but I found myself back in personal contact with the man with the chainsaw. Walking back into that Spanish town, seeing Los Ganados commit their lives to Los Illuminados, I knew it was a matter of time before I came face to face with one of the many chainsaws.

He was right, and in the same way that Leon Kennedy looks even more handsome in this remake, the chainsaw I ran into is much scarier.

What used to look like a man with a straw bag hiding his face now looks more like some kind of monster. He still shares similarities with his counterparts, villagers infected by the mind-controlling parasite that is Las Plagas, wearing the standard villager garb we’d expect. However, pot-bellied chainsaw men are a thing of the past here, and I still can’t get over those beady eyes.

Almost straight out of a slasher movie, this sack of potatoes seems fused with the chainsaw man’s face; His eyes are red and small and somehow hungry. Whereas running from a chainsaw previously felt like running from another villager who just happened to be stronger than the rest, it now feels like you’re running from a cursed entity.

And when this chainsaw gets its hands on you, it’s game over (unless you’re well used to using Leon’s new knife), but that’s not a bad thing. Getting killed by a chainsaw is murder dessert in Resident Evil 4 Remake, and I’m excited to see what other enemies (ie the Chainsaw Sisters) will look like later on.
