Report: Disco Elysium Writer and Designer Robert Kurvitz Files Lawsuit Against ZA/UM

One of the most surprising and dramatic video game stories of 2022 has taken a serious turn. according to a Tech News Space publication reportRobert Kurvitz, the principal designer and writer of the critically acclaimed elysee nightclub, is suing his former development studio ZA/UM. This news coincided with a Twitter post by Martin Luiga, who was one of the co-founders of the studio and one of the main driving forces behind the title, linking the post to the post. This most recent piece of information follows what has been revealed as an extremely messy breakup of certain developers who “involuntarily” left the studio.

According to the report, Kurvitz is filing the lawsuit against ZA/UM on behalf of his own Telomer company. Kurvitz is a founding member of Telomer and has been on the board of directors since 2020. In addition, and according to Kotaku AU, the Estonian Ministry of Justice website shows a tentative date of November 28, 2022 for the initial hearing. It also states that the hearing is to “obtain information and review documents,” which is the only information offered when looking at the listing.
This is an important indication that the old developers will not sit idly by. This will likely be the first of many legal exchanges between the two sides, potentially having some major ramifications for everyone involved. As we mentioned earlier, this all started when it was revealed that lead designer Robert Kurvitz, writer Helen Hindpere, art director Aleksander Rostov, and editor Martin Luiga were leaving ZA/UM at the end of 2021. All four were founding members of the studio. and were an integral aspect of the development of Elysee Disc.
The revelation that all four were no longer with the studio shocked the entire video game industry and sent the fanbase into a frenzy of questions. Luiga states in its disclosure, although not directly, that the reason for this was because investors changed hands and one of them was apparently “the first guy to be convicted of investment fraud in Estonia”. Luiga also mentions that ZA/UM might not have received any kind of investment without the investors to begin with. Any way you extrapolate it, there seems to be some kind of internal conflict within the studio, most of which could come to light when these first hearings take place.
