While Xbox boss Phil Spencer can’t make calls to seniors Activision Blizzard franchises, has said “what could happen” with titles like Star boat it’s exciting.
Phil Spencer has previously expressed his excitement at the prospect of old Activision Blizzard IPs being revived under Microsoft, and in a recent interview with cablingHe spoke again about his excitement at the prospect of revisiting titles like StarCraft or Warcraft.
From the start, he’s clear that he can’t make big decisions with Activision Blizzard, saying, “The first thing I’d say is that I’m not allowed to make any decisions about what happens at Blizzard or Activision or King. So this is all just talk.” and think about what the opportunity is: “Not just StarCraft, but WarCraft, when you think about the heritage of RTS games that we’re talking about here, specifically Blizzard.”
Spencer was obviously pretty careful about what she said in the interview and wanted to make it clear that nothing was set in stone at this point. “I don’t have any concrete plans today because I can’t really get in there and work with the teams. But StarCraft was a pivotal moment in gaming, right?”
He also expressed his excitement about simply talking to Activision, Blizzard, and King, to see the “back catalog and the opportunities we might have,” but again made it clear that it’s not something he can actively work on right now.
Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard is yet to come to fruition, as numerous regulatory boards are still trying to determine the impact of the deal. Spencer recently spoke of the investigations, where he acknowledged they are “guaranteed” but is still confident the deal will go through. With the UK Competition and Markets Authority setting a March date for a conclusion, it won’t be long until we find out if it happens or not.
