Payday 3 has an always-online connection, much to fans dismay

The next heist shooter payday 3 is the latest victim of the constant trend of games being always online.
In recent years, more and more games that focus on online multiplayer require you to have a constant internet connection just to play the game. As it turns out, Payday 3 is the next game to go for players who need to be always online, which isn’t entirely surprising considering it’s an online multiplayer title (thanks, eurogamer). This comes from a recent Payday 2 livestream hosted by Almir Listo, the global brand director at game developer Starbreeze, which you can check out below.
During the live stream, some viewers asked if it will have “an offline mode, like playing solo,” and Ready replied, “No. You’ll be able to play it solo, but I think you’ll have to have a connection to play because it’s made in Unreal. Engine, you are using cross progression, [and] crossplay I think we need you to be online.”
At first glance, you might not see the problem with a multiplayer title that requires a constant internet connection, but the concern is less to do with the game itself and more to do with the mods. A player on the Payday subreddit, ShrekDamagenoted how Payday 2 “will live forever [because] of mods, [Payday 3] it will live for a few months until Starbreeze shuts down.
Other fans on the subreddit suggest that those who have pre-ordered the game should cancel your orders to try and get Starbreeze to “listen to the community”, although with the game launching in September it’s unlikely that something as complicated as this could be changed so easily.
Starbreeze shared a look at some Payday 3 gameplay for the first time last month, where it also revealed the game’s September 21 release date. If he’s not too concerned with always-online, he’ll probably also be happy to hear that it’s going to be an Xbox Game Pass title from day one, too.
