Overwatch 2 is getting an animated miniseries next week, and it appears to be a prequel exploring the Omnic Crisis.
Since the first game’s release in 2016, Overwatch has had numerous animated shorts that explore the backstories of numerous characters, delving into some of the bigger stories here and there. But for the first time ever, Blizzard is releasing a 2D animated miniseries called Genesis – Part One: Breaking Dawn, which seeks to go into more detail about the Omnic Crisis, the huge incident inciting the entire world of Overwatch.
To quickly explain the Omnic Crisis, the world was basically a utopia using omnics (AI-powered robots) to automate society and ensure global economic equality. As is normal in the course of many stories about AI-powered robots, they gained sentience and understandably rebelled against their creators, starting a major war, namely the Omnic Crisis.
It’s not yet clear if the entire miniseries will go into Omnic Crisis, there will be some familiar faces in the first episode, including the Reaper, Reinhardt, and Ana, all seen fighting in the war. It also looks like we’ll be meeting the scientists who created the omnics, as well as getting the perspective of said omnics as well. There will be two more episodes after Dawn, so it could explore all kinds of stories in the world of Overwatch.
This upcoming miniseries isn’t the only way you’ll soon be able to experience the story in Overwatch 2, as some story missions will be added to the game in August. For some bewildering reason, you have to pay for thembut if you want more story in the game, that’s the place to be.
Genesis – Part One: Dawn will premiere on the official Play Overwatch YouTube account on July 6, the link to which you can find below.
