Is Bungie’s new IP, Matter, releasing in 2025? Xbox seems to think so
[ad_1]
bungie it has become a studio that is capable of handling more than just one game. As the developer continues to pump out content for fate 2There’s no end in sight to when support for the long-running loot shooter will end, even if The Final Shape expansion sounds like the end of the road for core content.
As work on Destiny 2 continues, an external team (consisting of many former Destiny developers) has been working on Marathon, a pull-out shooter named after a classic Bungie game. Marathon was just announced in May, and the developer said it would go dark for a long time and come back later to talk about details.
But if you’ve been keeping up with Bungie, you might be familiar with another mysterious new project they have in the works: Affair. Bungie registered the Matter trademark in 2018, and the studio has been giving very brief hints about the nature of the project, referring to it as a “whimsical” loot game in job advertisements.
Now, thanks to the FTC’s lawsuit with Microsoft over the latter’s proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard, Xbox has revealed all the other studios and publishers it considered acquiring before Activision Blizzard, including, of course, Bungie.
As part of that writing, through IGNMicrosoft shared an overview of the studio, its staff, future expansion plans, the games it’s known for, and of course, the unannounced projects it has in the works.
Matter was one such game, which Microsoft says is expected to release in 2025. It’s worth noting that the presentation doesn’t mention Marathon anywhere, nor does it list any Destiny 2 expansions after Beyond Light, which came out in 2020. It stands to reason that Microsoft may not have been aware of Marathon’s existence at the time of that document’s creation, otherwise it would have included something like “unannounced new game” in the report.
However, if Matter really is targeting a 2025 release, we may not be that far from some kind of reveal or trailer. Matter could also be a functional title, and the official title of the game could be something else, although Bungie likes one-word game titles.
