Prepare for the process
You will only need two things to butcher the meat. A butcher table and a place to store dead animals.
If you haven’t already, build a room to put the table in, you’ll need a 2 x 3 space. You can build the table outside, but your worker will take penalties. You can find the butcher table in the production menu or in the architect tab. It will come in different materials, starting with wood.

To store dead animals, you can allocate an area to be either a dump material storage area (since dead animals cannot be placed in a normal storage area) or any freezer/cold room. You can store dead animals outside, but the carcasses won’t last long.
With the table raised and the area ready, you can start the process.
get yourself some meat
Depending on where you are, different animals may or may not be available. If you can, try to make some kind of Animal Pen to make sure you have something on standby.

To hunt an animal, you must first assign a settler to become a hunter and equip them with a weapon (or melee weapon, but that’s more dangerous and more tedious). Look around your map for a safe animal to take on.
You may find it easier to recruit the settler to have more control over what they do, to make sure they are hunting to the best of their ability. Assign an animal for them to shoot and wait for them to take it down successfully.

That colonist, or another, can take the dead animal directly to the warehouse.
butcher away
To actually process the dead animal into meat, you need to select the butcher’s table and add an invoice. Click ‘add account’ in the top corner of the table menu and select ‘butcher creature’. To this will be added the invoice of a settler assigned to the kitchen to be carried out. With a dead animal available, the assigned chef will transport the carcass and butcher it.

You will soon turn it into meat, the amount and type will depend on the animal it was harvested from. Be sure to store the meat in a safe place or make it a meal right away.
