How Often Does Mojang Update Minecraft?

the updates of Minecraft recently they have been a bit controversial (*ahem*… Caves and Cliffs…). However, with a recent statement, all that may be about to change. We’ve gotten used to big annual themed updates that overhaul a certain aspect of the game. We have seen this with updates like: Aquatic Update, Caves and Cliffs, Wild Update, not to mention many others. And while those updates have been huge, in recent years they’ve been a bit of a pain.

There have been two main problems with annual updates in recent years. Caves and Cliffs was split into three parts, thus falling victim to the “over-promise and under-deliver” trap early on, which disappointed fans. Additionally, the community did not consider the wild update to be “wild enough”, something the developers have picked up on. So from a technical and thematic point of view, Mojang has underperformed. So what is the latest strategy?

Release schedule for new Mojang updates

Starting with the 1.19.3 update, Minecraft will now benefit from numerous smaller updates per year that will include smaller improvements and bug fixes that the team deems ready to release. And that’s in addition to the annual theme updates that the community has grown accustomed to. This will help Minecraft in many, many ways.

Firstly, it means more content for people like us to enjoy throughout the year, so we don’t have to wait whole years (and possibly longer) to receive the content we were promised.

Second, Mojang workers and developers will now be able to work on content at different rates, ensuring a positive work environment that will result in polished, finished content. Without the stress of everything going into the one annual update, they can now look to finish things up for the smaller installs and then work on the larger, long-awaited update.

Third, it will be easier to stick to a strong theme for the annual update, since the outliers will already have been released that year. The Wild Update could have more “Wild” if all the anomalous content was released outside of the Wild Update.

We can now look forward to this new policy as it looks promising for producers and consumers.
