Don’t worry Xbox fans, Avowed’s graphics are going to get better

We got our first look at Obsidian’s new RPG Avowed at Xbox Games Showcase earlier this month in the form of a two-minute trailer. The first-person fantasy game looks pretty good, but some fans have already tempered their expectations.
The Avowed trailer was most recently shared on the forum, RPG Codex, and was met with a mix of responses; some can’t wait for the game, some are fed up with the fantasy settings and many others think the trailer is “shittiest trailer i’ve seen in a long time.” Ultimately, there are over 80 pages of criticism, some of which is actually constructive, with some enthusiasm from Obsidian fans.
An Obsidian developer with the username ‘Briar Diem’ soon contributed to the thread, trying to give players a little more hope in Avowed and share some of the Obsidian process with users. “All I can say is that the game not entered alpha yet, the art will be refined in various ways. The lighting will change. Although, the designs will not change, of course. They are what they are.”
Not yet reaching the Alpha period while scheduled for a 2024 release also worried some fans, which Briar Diem later clarified: “In previous projects, Alpha periods would sometimes only last a few months. this is actually the longest we’ll ever have for the Alpha/Beta period for any game on Obsidian by a long shot, and that’s good news.”
“The trailer doesn’t show much in its two-minute running time. To clear up any misconceptions I’ll say this, the game is big and open, it’s unfair to compare it to Outer Worlds (I think Feargus is trying to keep expectations low just in case) which I think is nothing like it, Briar Diem also details .
Speaking further about the Avowed trailer, Briar Diem adds: “A lot of the game is being kept under wraps at the moment, I think you’ll have to wait until the next trailer or some sort of reveal to really see it, but it’s for sure.” assume it is very obsidian. No, the whole game isn’t a bright and happy city, no, it’s not all so visually indistinct. There are many characters, quests, conversations, various game mechanics, a great story, etc.
They then add that “development is going well at the moment, Microsoft lets Obsidian’s free license do whatever it wants, and whether it succeeds or fails, it will be on Obsidian’s own terms.”
So ultimately Avowed is shaping up to be bigger than other Obsidian titles, and will certainly look better than it did in the trailer shown during Xbox Games Showcase, if Briar Diem is correct. Now, we just have to wait to hear more official news about the game and see what it’s really like to cast spells across the world of Eora.
For those who just heard about Obsidian’s Avowed (where have you been?), the game is set in the same universe as Pillars of Eternity. Players will take on an envoy from the Aedyr Empire and will then be sent to investigate a strange plague plaguing the remote Living Lands region. Throughout your adventure, you can expect to use magic, melee, and firearms to take on glowing beasts in the open areas, and even befriend NPCs in typical Obsidian style.
What do you think of Avowed so far? Are you shivering at the thought of Obsidian’s take on Skyrim, or did the trailer make you yawn?
