Diablo 4’s stash is not bigger because of the hit to performance it would cause

One of the many, many problems Diablo 4 has had since its release is the lack of some obvious expected quality of life and convenience features. There’s no group finder, no way to bookmark/block items, no ability to search or filter, and much more.

But perhaps a prevailing problem is how limited storage space is. Even the player’s own inventory can quickly become clogged with non-gear and non-weapon items. The new Season of the Malignant introduced what are basically super gems, another type of item that makes your inventory feel smaller and smaller.

When you want to download stuff from your stash in the cities, you find yourself with limited options. You start with a single stash tab and can buy another three for a total of four. While Blizzard is adding an additional stash tab in the game’s next patch, many are wondering why we can’t buy more.

The answer has to do with performance overhead, as Diablo 4 Associate Game Director Joseph Piepiora explained. The lead developer responded to a Twitter comment regretting that we are only getting one extra stash tab.

“When we say they’re expensive, what we mean is that they create a lot of memory overhead,” Piepiora said.

“When you see another player in the game, you load them up and their entire stash fills up with all of their items. This is what the teams are working diligently to improve so we can have more as soon as possible.”

“Basically, this is not a storage issue, it’s a performance issue,” he said. aggregate.

It’s not clear why the game needs to load each player’s stash when you encounter them, but that might be the main reason behind this limitation. It’s also worth keeping in mind that Diablo 4 is a cross-gen game, so every change has to work on everything from the lowest tier (PS4/Xbox One) to powerful PCs.

So while PC gamers can pour money into the problem, console gamers are limited to the onboard memory of their systems. However, rather than expanding the storage space itself, we hope that Blizzard has more practical options in the works.
