Can bad games have good sequels?
[ad_1]
Welcome to the 54th episode of the Best Games Ever show – the best game that is the sequel to a bad game.
Because we live in a meritocracy, junk stuff never has a scar. Except we don’t live in a meritocracy, we live in hell, and therefore the trashy stuff often gets nine sequels and a spinoff TV show, while the good stuff is busy getting rejected in boardrooms. This is life.
But it’s not necessarily a bad thing, because from time to time, sequels far outpace their progenitors. It’s a phenomenon that occurs most often in the world of video games, where sequels are often based on basic games that perhaps have good ideas but leave a lot of refinement to be desired in execution. The old Hollywood adage that “the sequel is never as good as the original” just doesn’t apply to our medium. In fact, quite the opposite.
Consider, to pull two completely random examples out of thin air, assassin’s creed 2 and watchdogs 2. Both are highly regarded as great games in their own right, and both are sequels to games that were once considered mediocre. But, when you think about it, they’re not entirely different from the games that follow: the mechanics are there, the mission design, the visual style: it’s generally just as present and right in the first Assassin’s Creed as it is in the first Watch_Dogs. . The execution, however, has improved tremendously.
This is a means of iteration and experimentation. Sometimes things work, sometimes they don’t, but in general, developments in technology and game design are creeping towards better ways of doing things. Believe. Maybe not always. Just like each episode of this podcast builds on the last one as we find more of our groove. To find out which sequels our panelists think are so much better than the originals, you need to watch or listen to episode 54 of The Best Games Ever show. Luckily for you, there are a bewildering number of ways to do it below.

Hmm.
“What is the best game show of all time?” you ask? Well, it’s essentially a 30 minute panel where people (Jim Trinca and associates) decide on the best game in a specific category. That’s all. It’s good. listen to it.
