World premiere gameplay footage of Alan Wake 2 from Summer Game Fest 2023.

Alan Wake 2 is the first survival horror game from Remedy Entertainment, and the gameplay will feature more variations from the first game.

In the demo shown during the Summer Game Fest 2023 keynote, FBI Agent Saga Anderson carries a flashlight and a firearm, but unlike the first Alan Wake, the camera is closer to her shoulder.

You probably noticed in the demo video that the game slows down a bit, and this is intentional to focus on more detail, tell a horror story, and add suspense so that when combat does happen, it’s more impactful.

“It’s a more cohesive package,” added co-director Kyle Rowley. “That was something we were very aware of from the first game; where there was story, then a lot of combat, and then a little bit of story. Here we are. We’re trying to blend story with combat and exploration. We have cinematics, there’s action in alive, all in a little more cohesive way.

“As you’re figuring out the story and piecing together clues, this whole thing is now a real game,” studio head Sam Lake said. “So you’re actively playing while experiencing the story.”

Alan Wake 2 will be available for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S on October 17. Remedy will support the game after launch with free content and two paid expansions: Night Springs and Lake House.

Set 13 years after the disappearance of Alan Wake, Agent Saga Anderson has been sent by the FBI to Bright Falls to investigate a series of ritual murders. There, she finds herself trapped in a supernatural horror story that was written by Wake in hopes of escaping from his captivity.

In the game, you can play as either Alan or Saga in two separate single-player stories, played in any order you choose. Both can fight enemies using firearms and a flashlight while exploring various locations such as Bright Falls, the city of Watery, and the Dark Place, an alternate dimension.
