This is why Roblox is not on PlayStation

The FTC’s ongoing lawsuit against Microsoft to prevent the company from going ahead with its proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard has produced even more behind-the-scenes information about companies and business deals involving Xbox and rival PlayStation.

As part of the court’s evidence-gathering process, any interested person such as PlayStation boss Jim Ryan can provide statements/evidence to prove whether or not the acquisition should go ahead. Ryan previously hit out at Xbox in a number of ways during testing, including claiming that publishers don’t like Xbox Game Pass.

In another trial exhibit, Ryan told investors in early 2022 that Sony is tired of making Roblox available on PlayStation, due to the platform’s popularity among children. The vast majority of Roblox’s audience (around 50%) is under the age of 13, so Sony is careful not to make anything that could exploit children available on its platform.

Roblox is available on PC, mobile, and Xbox, but has been conspicuously absent on PlayStation.

“Historically, because of the large number of kids playing on the PlayStation, we’ve been very careful about opening them up to anything that could exploit them,” Ryan said (as observed by Axios) when asked about the absence of Roblox.

That being said, Sony’s stance on the matter has since softened, but the game has yet to be released on PlayStation.

“We’ve been conservative for too long and now we’re interacting with the people at Roblox. We hope that will change,” Ryan added.

Roblox has sparked controversy in the past for poor moderation that creates an unsafe environment for children, such as modes with harmful content. The company behind it has also been criticized for pocket more than 75% of the profits from user-generated content.
