Digital Tourism is a huge part of gaming’s appeal, but what is the best game for globetrotting?

Welcome to episode 56 of The Best Games Ever Show – the best travel game for globetrotters.
This week we welcome our first guest panelist, the always lovable Bertie Purchese from Eurogamer! If you’ve ever been to EGX, you might have met Bertie as the eccentric host of the Eurogamer Pub Quiz, and if you’re generally interested in game writing, you’ll have come across his tireless work as Eurogamer’s associate editor, covering news, he evokes functions, records podcasts, and takes care of his Support Program. He loves role-playing games, which often have a fabulous globe-trotting aspect (though not necessarily from our world), so we asked him to bring that experience to today’s topic. And indeed he did show up!
Video games are a wonderful medium for virtual travel. They don’t just show you new places, they let you interact with them. Live in them. Breathe its air. Talk to the people who live there. I mean, sure, usually your main form of interaction with a game world is violence, but that’s not always the case. And, in addition to inviting us to adventure into the realms of fantasy, video games have also gotten extraordinarily good at depicting real-life locations. Contemporary locations like trendy New York, Tokyo, and London are very well represented as gaming locations. Untethered by linear time, historical action-adventure games like the Assassin’s Creed series and Ghost of Tsushima give us a glimpse of the world as it once was, not just as it is now, which is an exciting aspect of the medium for anyone interested in last.
But what is the best game for digital tourism? Which game really makes you feel like a globe-trotting citizen of the world, according to our esteemed panelists? Well, to find out, you’re going to have to look or listen through one of the helpful methods below.

You can also just read the summary below, if you’re the type of person who jumps to the last page of a book (an evil, a reprobate, a bad seed).
Thomas

tom chose Football coach which seems like a reasonable option given that you can take a soccer team to international leagues and play matches against teams from all over the world. However, Tom didn’t make that argument, only pointing out that he once played it on his phone at an airport.
Bertie buys

Bertie went with Alpha Protocol, a classic Obsidian spy RPG that gave us a Mass Effect-style spin on spy TV shows like ALIAS, and was a stopper, too. Unfortunately, it was massively overshadowed by Mass Effect and never found the wide audience it deserved. But those of us who played it at the time enjoyed the thrill of being an international super-spy in such exotic places as Rome, Taipei, Saudi Arabia, and Moscow.

Microsoft flight simulator is the ultimate jetsetting game. Literally. With its stunningly detailed world map (regularly updated with higher-quality assets) and realistic flight mechanics that are as simple or as complex as you want, the 2020 revamp of the classic sim series came at a time when people were stuck in their homes and were crying out to travel again, so it’s perhaps not surprising that it’s become so popular with sim-heads and casual gamers alike. With a sequel on the way in 2024 that adds a highly anticipated job system to the proceedings, the future for this series looks very bright.
“What is the best game show of all time?” you ask? Well, it’s essentially a 30 minute panel where people (Jim Trinca and associates) decide on the best game in a specific category. That’s all. It’s good. listen to it.
