With Alan Wake 2’s pair of protagonists, there’s no “right or wrong way to play” says Remedy

Alan Wake 2 was first revealed in 2021, but it wasn’t until the first trailer for the game in May that we learned we’d actually be playing as two different characters. Of course, we will once again play as the titular Alan Wake, but also as the FBI agent Saga Anderson. Dual leads are a tough thing to balance, and for players it can be even tougher as you can switch between Alan and Saga’s stories pretty much whenever you want. But in a recent interview with GamesRadarRemedy wanted to make sure you know not to worry, as there is no specific way you should play.

“The writing team has a story they really want to tell, and our challenge as a narrative design team is to make that story playable and interactive,” said Lead Narrative Designer Molly Maloney. “The key here is that there is no right or wrong way to play the content. The content is literally different and enjoyable no matter what order you play it in.”

While playing the game, you can’t switch characters at will, but you can quite easily in the break rooms, separate areas where you can save and switch between Alan and Saga. These break rooms will also allow you to use a new feature, the Case Board, which is exactly what it sounds like: a board where you can sort clues, make deductions, everything a detective might do.

“The box board actually acts as a nice re-entry for players if they’ve decided to play in a different way,” Game Director Kyle Rowley shared. “Basically, it tracks everything you’ve been doing in the game from a Saga perspective. In a way, it’s a bit like an interactive search log of other games. It’s tracking what you’re doing, but you’re the one mapping it. outside.”

It looks like Alan Wake 2 will really change things up from the first game, which is more of an action game with some very light horror influences. The combat will also be different from the first game, helping it lean towards the survival genre.

Alan Wake 2 is out on October 17 and will be available on PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S.
