We should all be very thankful we never got a rumoured Elden Ring season pass

First reported by the people of twisted voxel, a rumor has surfaced around the long-awaited Elden Ring DLC. Supposedly, the Elden Ring DLC revealed on Twitter earlier this year, Shadow of the Erdtree, would initially be released as a a ‘season pass’ made up of two DLC.
FromSoftware reportedly scrapped the season pass concept, favoring a larger one-off expansion in the form of Shadow of the Erdtree. We also got a small content update in the form of a PvP-focused coliseum update that also arrived late last year.
Information about this aborted season pass arrives of discord (via Twisted Voxel), of all places, but it comes from Lance McDonald, who is no stranger to FromSoftware. He might recognize the name of a massive PT file extraction operation, or maybe as the guy who figured out how to make Bloodborne even better.
Regardless of where it comes from, this information should be taken with a grain of salt until confirmed by FromSoftware; although, the chances of the developer confirming that a season pass was ever in the works are pretty slim.
In the Discord messages, McDonald details that he doesn’t know when the season pass was cancelled. The coliseums appeared one day for free, and that was it. McDonald’s seems to suggest that FromSoftware was missing a lot of content, so now only one gigantic DLC pack is coming. This makes sense, but again, we don’t know if it’s necessarily true. Perhaps more will be revealed when we finally get to see what Shadows of the Erdtree has to offer.
McDonald also notes that this is a Bloodborne-like situation during post-launch; Bloodborne supposedly had two DLCs planned as well, before the two were merged into one DLC known as The Old Hunters.
Either way, if true, this is good news for fans. In an industry that’s overflowing with season passes, battle passes, and more, I really wouldn’t want to buy another one. Just look at how Blizzard has been handling the service in Diablo Immortal and Overwatch 2 – that’s not something we want to see in a FromSoft game, is it?
