Modern Warfare 2 tops October sales, but Elden Ring clings on to year’s best-to-date

There was little doubt that modern warfare 2 it was not going to be the best-selling game of October. Call of Duty has done this consistently for the past 15 years, even with Vanguard’s relatively underperforming performance last year.

But there’s another title that Call of Duty also tends to claim at launch, and that’s the best-selling game of the year. However, things are a little different this year.

For the first time in a long, long time, Call of Duty has competition capable of trading blows with this coveted title. that being elden ringwhich remains the best-selling game of 2022, even after the release of Modern Warfare 2.

That’s according to NPD Group’s October report, which has Modern Warfare 2 at number two in sales to date. The NPD report covers sales in the US, but since it is typically the largest gaming market, it is often representative of the rest of the world.

Both Activision and Bandai Namco provide digital and physical data to the NPD, meaning sales across all platforms are included. The only caveat, though, is that Activision doesn’t provide Steam sales figures. This has been the case for a while, but it didn’t matter much for Call of Duty as it skipped Steam in recent years.

But with Modern Warfare 2 performing as well as it did on Steam, there might be an edge missing for Call of Duty this year that wasn’t there before.

However, there are still two months in the year where Call of Duty’s continued sales could allow it to eventually surpass Elden Ring. However, it’s worth noting that Elden Ring has yet to be discounted on any official platform, which means that most of its nearly 17 million copies sold at full price.

Bandai Namco may discount the game in the coming weeks to keep Call of Duty at bay. No matter what, it’s unusual for a FromSoftware game to take on the biggest shooter franchise, but it just goes to show how important the release of Elden Ring is.
