Nintendo, Valve and Twitch suffer fake troll accounts thanks to Twitter Blue Check changes
[ad_1]
It had to happen: Twitter users are posing as real companies and accounts are being “verified” thanks to changes made to the blue verification system.
Nintendo, Rockstar Games, Twitch, and Valve are just a few of the companies that have fallen victim to fake accounts, all of which carry the little blue “verified” check mark.
You see, now anyone can get a blue tick next to their name for just $8 thanks to a new policy put in place by new Twitter owner Elon Musk.
Before the new policy went into effect, the only way to get a blue tick next to a Twitter handle was through actual verification. Verification is now completely useless as anyone can pay a fee to get one.
This new feature is causing all kinds of confusion among users. For example, a “new” Nintendo of America account appeared with a blue tick on the social network, and one of its tweets featured Mario pointing a finger at people. Obviously, most people figured it out pretty quickly that it was a fake account, considering Mario would never give anyone a one-finger Kentucky welcome, but it still caused a bit of a ruckus.
A fake Valve account was also created and people thought that the company’s “next competitive platform” was a project called “Richocet: Neon Prime” (thanks, eurogamer).
Rockstar and Twitch have also created fake accounts in his name.
Some accounts have been suspended, except for the “Twitch” account, for being a parody account.
Yesterday, to help people differentiate which accounts are legitimate, Twitter released an “official” tag for users like Nintendo and others. However, Musk decided that he didn’t like him and abandoned the new designated check.
In a tweet, Musk said that Twitter “will be doing a lot of dumb stuff in the coming months” and will “keep what works and change what doesn’t.”
It remains to be seen if there will be any changes to the blue check system. However, in the meantime, you can find out if a Twitter account paid for a blue tick or was verified for other reasons by clicking the verified button in the user profile.
